TELSTRA has been fined more than $100,000 by the communications watchdog after people on the Do Not Call register continued to receive Telstra telemarketing calls even after the telco was alerted to the problem. The Australian Communications and Media Authority yesterday announced the $102,500 fine following a year-long investigation into its breaches of the register. The calls were made on Telstra's behalf by a contractor, which it declined to name, but only Telstra will be fined. The regulator's chairman, Chris Chapman, attacked Telstra for failing to show leadership. "The ACMA expects large businesses like Telstra to be leading the way and setting an example when it comes to compliance with the Do Not Call Register €” not falling behind," he said.
